2008-12-27 Death Note 13: How to Read

It’s funny how I always encounter things that I never expect to encounter. Once again, I dug up more treasures: Death Note 13. Yes, that’s right, the thirteenth volume of the manga, Death Note. Haha it is actually the “Ultimate Death Note Encyclopedia”. I must say it was very stressful to read, kind of similar to the manga but I still love it. It is stressful because so much context and information are introduced on a single page. Therefore, it took me hours to read it but it was worth it. I gained new knowledge about the characters, the story, and the creators themselves.

After reading this ultimate guide, I gained a new point of view and respect for the author, Tsugumi Ohba, and the artist, Takeshi Obata. It was very interesting to learn that they communicated with each other through their editor rather than meeting up: it showed very good cooperation skills. However, by reading through the interviews, I realized Ohba is not as intelligent and amazing as I had thought. Sad, but true, I was very disappointed in her Before, I had thought Ohba planned each step of the story, from beginning to end, very carefully to capture the reader. Realistically, she is a procrastinator and created the story as it progresses. T_T While I thought she carefully chose the name Light Yagami and items such as the “apple” being Ryuk’s favorite for deeper, hidden meanings. To my great disappointment, it was all a coincidence. Lucky much. Throughout the interviews, I can sense that Ohba didn’t really care about the manga and the readers. She just wanted to finish it. She doesn’t even enjoy manga!!! “First off, manga isn’t my hobby.” I think Ohba is also a little arrogant after realizing his story, Death Note, was so popular. “My favorite manga is Death Note. […] [I don’t admire other creator], but my editor”. Either way, my opionon of Ohba sensei lowered greatly. I also felt sorry for Obata sensei. He didn’t have any idea how the story will develop after two/three chapters and is in the same boat as the reader, yet, he still have to draw out the manga. He really is amazing. It was him who made the apple important, and added better insights to the story. Even though he didn’t come up with the story, I think Obata really is the more contributing creator of the manga. The drawings were so detailed and it kept the reader’s attention despite of all the dialogue. Also, credit to Obata who incorporated the dialogue bubbles effectively so we can understand what was happening. ^^ Obata seems like an experienced, modest, and friendly person who works hard. He knows his place in the field and he respects other artists/ authors. I admire his skills and character. Death Note 13 is such a fun book to read. I learned many interesting things. Here are some I'd to share:
  • Obata is bad at drawing female characters…haha no surprise there. I thought the guys were so much cooler and better looking
  • Obata got sick after finishing Death Note. He thought it was a curse from drawing Death Note. So he decided to go for a fortune read with tarot cards. Coincidentally, the first card that went up was Death. It got Ohba really worried he was going to die but it was really just a cold. He got better after he took some medications.
  • Ohba believes L is the smartest character throughout Death Note.
  • Obata thinks Near is the smartest because he cheats…I agree! :D
  • Both artists like L the best.
Overall, this is a great book for all Death Note fans. To have the ultimate Death Note experience I recommend you read the manga, then this book, then watch the live action, then reread the manga again...and possibly watch the anime, and lastly, watch the spin-off movie: L changes the world. After all that, which will probably take some time, buy Death Note merchandise! My friend got this Death Note wallet and it’s soooo cool!
